“P.S.: Stay alert to the game. Frisbees can hurt when they hit you,” said Rebekah Hodges, of Ozark, a junior health information management major.

Hodges is not talking about an experience throwing a Frisbee with friends at the park. She is referring to Ultimate Frisbee.

The game consists of a team of players, end zones, and rules similar to the game of soccer. Students from Arkansas Tech play at Old Post Park every week for fun or at the intramural fields in competition. Ultimate Frisbee can be seen as a sport or a fun activity with males or females.

“It takes athleticism, teamwork, and practice just like any other sport,” said Robert Carper of Springdale, a junior management and marketing major.

Carper explained that the difference in Frisbee being a sport or fun activity is the use of the Frisbee. Throwing the disc around is a fun time with friends. Ultimate Frisbee is an active sport involving plays and competition by nature.

Terry Fang of Russellville, a senior electrical engineering major, said, “Many competitions are held throughout not only the U.S., but also other countries.”

Frisbee is a worldwide sport containing official rules and regulations. Fang also explained he believes it is a sport because it pushes him to his fullest potential. Even if he is not chasing a Frisbee, he constantly runs to keep up with his teammates.

While Ultimate Frisbee can be played by males and females, Arkansas Tech

intramurals separate the two during Ultimate Frisbee season. Male and female Frisbee teams are separated into different leagues.

The male teams never play against the female teams in any games or tournaments.

“People give me a hard time. Apparently girls are not good at any sport according to my guy friends and they tease me the whole time I play,” said Hodges. She explained that it can be difficult at times because guys are rough. They can hurt her when they knock a Frisbee from her hands. However, she still has a blast when she plays even if the guys give her a hard time.

“Girls may always have a hard time on the field with men, but as long as a guy can see that a girl is really working hard, he will usually do his best to involve her as much as possible,” said Morgan Hines, a junior mechanical engineering major from Russellville.

Hines plays Frisbee every week and said he enjoys seeing girls play as long as they are outside enjoying themselves.

Amanda Anderson had words of encouragement to females that find difficulty fitting in a male-dominated sport.

“I feel that if females have any disadvantage compared to males in this sport it would be getting over themselves mentally,” said Anderson, of Farmington, a senior hospitality major focusing on event management and tourism.

“They need to block out the idea that they are not good enough and find their own personal strengths.”
