Phi Mu is sponsoring a free self-defense seminar Wednesday from 6 to 8 p.m. in the Young Game Room

John Terry III, who has served as a law enforcement chaplain  and as a regional director for the National Security Alliance, will lead the seminar.

Terry is also a martial artist who was inducted into the United States Martial Arts Hall of Fame for his “kid-safe” advocacy work.

"This is a passion of mine; this is what I believe in. This is a way we can keep women from becoming a statistic," Terry said.

“I have several friends who have taken his self-defense classes and they have said that the classes were very informative and practical,” said Clair Antoon, a junior English major from El Dorado and the event coordinator.

“Mr. Terry has seen the aftermath of sexual assault and knows what it takes to have to pick up the pieces. He is so passionate about helping women to avoid joining the ever-growing sexual assault statistic,” Antoon said.

Terry is no stranger to the dangers women face.

Through his seminar, he will “teach all of us to be more aware of our surroundings and show us how to avoid becoming a victim.”

“It's very important for women to learn how to protect themselves in dangerous situations, and more importantly, learn how to avoid those situations in the first place,” Antoon said.

Terry will help students learn self-defense through showing “videos on date rape, going over ways to avoid being attacked by a mugger, instruction and demonstration of self defense techniques, and then actual practice,” said Antoon.
