It was a great night for European actors at the 80th Academy Awards. Daniel Day-Lewis, Tilda Swinton, Javier Bardem and Marion Cotillard, all European actors, took home Oscar gold Sunday night.

Day-Lewis was the front-runner in the best actor category with his fiery performance in There Will Be Blood. George Clooney, Tommy Lee-Jones, Johnny Depp and Viggo Mortensen were also nominated for the award.

Marion Cotillard took home the best actress award for her performance of French singer Edith Piaf in La Vie En Rose. Others nominated were Cate Blanchett, Julie Christie, Ellen Page and Laura Linney.

Javier Bardem’s scary performance as Anton Chigurh in No Country for Old Men, won him the Oscar for best actor in a supporting role. Casey Affleck, Philip Seymour-Hoffman, Hal Holbrook and Tom Wilkinson were also nominated for the award.

Lead actress in a supporting role went to Tilda Swinton, the ruthless attorney in Michael Clayton. Others nominated included Cate Blanchett, Ruby Dee, Amy Adams and Saoirse Ronan.

The Coen brothers were also big winners, winning for adapted screenplay, directing and their movie, No Country for Old Men, won best picture.

Jon Stewart hosted the event for the second time. He had only nine days to prepare for the show due to the writers strike.
