Arkansas Tech University students took home several awards for their artistic entries at the 21st annual CenturyTel Collegiate Competition and Exhibition hosted by the Arkansas River Valley Arts Center on Feb. 3. Rosibel Solano, a senior graphic design major from Venezuela, received the best in show award and a $150 scholarship. Her entry was chosen from more than 60 pieces of artwork submitted by students at Arkansas Tech, the University of Central Arkansas and the University of the Ozarks. Solano also won a future exhibit to showcase her artwork at the Arkansas River Valley Arts Center. The winning self-portrait was an oil painting entitled “Me in the Mirror.” Solano said she was surprised when she won the best in show award. “I knew there were many talented artists entered,” said Solano, “so I did not really think I had much of a chance.” Another Tech student, Shannon Saucy of Cabot, won first place for an untitled drawing. Tech students Carolyn Brickels of Russellville, Shelsey Grace of Russellville and Aaron Kimberlin of Mena all received honorable mention awards. Dr. Cathy Caldwell, professor and art department chair, said the department is proud of all Tech students who submitted work for the competition. “Presenting and preparing work for a competitive exhibit is a professional activity we encourage as a department,” said Caldwell. “We set high standards and our students meet and often exceed our expectations of excellence. Having our students do so well at this competition, as well as others, helps to tell our story visually.” The exhibit will be on display at the Arkansas River Valley Arts Center through the end of February |
