Amy Pennington, an Arkansas Tech University graduate, began serving as the new Dean of Students this academic year.

Pennington, who has previously worked in the Office of Admissions and the Office of Residential Life, had served as the Director of International and Multicultural Student Services for the past eight years.

Pennington graduated from Tech in 1997 with a bachelor of science degree in biology.  In 1997, she also earned a master of education degree in higher education administration from the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville.

As Dean of Students, Pennington does many of the same tasks to assist students as she did with IMSS, simply on a bigger scale.  The difference is that this position focuses on all students, not just one specific group, said Pennington.

“My responsibilities have increased dramatically.  Instead of leading one department, I assist with around 10 departments,” said Pennington.

Within Student Services, Pennington assists with Greek Life, B2E, Student Organizations, Counseling and Parent Relations.  She is also involved with the Health and Wellness Center, Public Safety, Residence Life and the Disability and Testing Centers.

“I enjoy working with college students.  Any position that allows me to have student interaction and to collaborate in such ways that will make the collegiate experience great for a student excites me,” said Pennington.

Pennington draws from her experience as an undergraduate student at Tech to serve in her position as Dean of Students. As a freshman, she worked in the Admissions Office giving campus tours.  Because of this opportunity, she was able to interact with a number of administrators on campus. They were always willing to give great advice and encouragement, Pennington said.

“Their support empowered me to get involved in Greek life, SGA and many other groups, in addition to receiving an excellent education from outstanding faculty. I think Tech has something really special. It’s rare that you can find a college or university that can experience phenomenal growth but keep the focus on students and how to better serve them," Pennington said

"I feel privileged to work here and have the chance to possibly return the favors that were extended to me during my time at Tech,” she added.

Student Services works very closely with many student clubs and organizations, providing the opportunity to meet many students through their involvement in campus activities, Pennington said.   Pennington is also serving as an advisor to the Student Government Association, which she was involved in as a student at Tech.

“Being involved from both perspectives is a really cool experience.”

Pennington sees herself as a support person, making sure that the staff in charge of all the areas within the division have the tools they need to do a good job.

“I want Tech students to have a great, memorable experience while they’re studying here. The four years that they spend with us will be some of the best in their life," she said.

"If I can have a positive influence and be a source of support and encouragement, I’ll be satisfied. That means staying in tune with our students, taking time to get to know them and taking a real interest in their lives and future plans. That’s what really keeps me going. Their energy is contagious and exciting to be a part of.”
