On this day in 1978, Wanda Rutkiewicz reached the top of Mount Everest, thus becoming the third woman to climb the highest peak in the world, and the first Pole (male or female). Then she will make another seven ascents more than 8,000 meters (26,247 feet) in height, having established herself as one of the most famous climbers and one of the greatest female climbers of all time.

Wanda Rutkiewicz was born on February 4, 1943 in a Polish family in the village of Plungiani, now part of Lithuania. Wanda studied electrical engineering at the Wroclaw University of Technology. She discovered her passion for climbing by accident after her motorcycle ran out of fuel in 1961. One of the people who stopped to help invited her to join him on a mountain climb.

Ten years after reaching the summit of Mount Everest, Wanda Rutkiewicz became the first woman to climb K2 - the second largest peak in the world - without using additional oxygen. Two of her fellow climbers died on the descent from K2, but she continued to pursue her dream.

She published books and made documentaries about her ascents. In 1990, she announced her goal to climb eight peaks with a height of over 8,000 meters (26,247 feet) in just a year. Although she did not complete this specific mission, Wanda Rutkiewicz continues to inspire generations of climbers to follow in her footsteps.
