With the recent events that have unfolded on Tech’s campus, students may be looking for ways to feel safe by having the ability to defend themselves in certain situations. Dr. Dan Martin, behavioral sciences department head and associate professor of sociology, is ensuring students’ safety by offering self-defense classes.

The classes got their start when a few students approached Martin about teaching a self-defense class. He took their suggestions into consideration and decided to make it happen. Classes are currently held at The Proving Ground Gym located on El Paso.

Safety experts across the country agree that self-defense classes make students more aware of their surroundings and the dangers they may face.

Brianna Hennington, a senior sociology and psychology double major from Russellville, has been participating in the classes on a frequent basis.

“I like it a lot,” Hennington said. “I definitely feel safer on campus and what I have learned is useful.”

In real world situations, an attack typically lasts a few seconds. It is important to be knowledgeable in ways to get away fast, something Hennington now knows.

“The first class was really basic as far as moves. It was mainly ways to avoid situations as well as getting away when someone grabs your arm. This past class was more technical. We learned a couple of ways to get out from under someone if they get you on the ground,” Hennington said. “Martin stresses that he’s trying to teach us how to survive and how to get a moment to run away.”

Martin, who is teaching the classes, holds a seventh degree black belt in aikido, sixth degree belt in judo, sixth degree belt in jui-jitsu, and also power lifts. Martin co-owns the Proving Ground with David Shirley. Aside from self-defense classes, The Proving Ground offers judo, aikido, muay thai, and MMA fighting classes.

“Being trained in martial arts for 35 years, I have the ability to actually teach you how to defend yourself. Most instructors don’t know the difference between fighting and self-defense,” Martin stated.

Martin has conducted two classes so far and is planning two more. The cost is $20 for those who pre-register and $30 at the door. For more information contact Martin at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it or 479-970-1706.
