With all of the major events of the nation going on, such as the economy and health care, one would think fashion wouldn’t matter at a time like this, right? Wrong. Just last week it was the thing to talk about because of the Video Music Awards. Though Kanye West and Taylor Swift were involved in the major controversy of the night, the discussion of fashion that surrounds those awards every year cannot be forgotten. Honestly, I wasn’t even paying much attention to what people were wearing (or, as they say, who are you wearing?), or at least until Lady GaGa entered the VMA’s. For one, she had her face covered the entire night, or at least parts of it. Her first outfit, with black feathers and a mask that covered only a quarter of her face, was acceptable, though still a little out there. No regular person would think of wearing it out in public unless it was a fashion show. I know that awards shows are a chance for celebrities to be unique, stand out and express their personal style, but she overdoes it. I love her music but she has an out-there style. While sitting in the audience, she had a thing of crème feathers around her head making her look like a bird nest, and yet it got worse. When she went to accept an award, she had a lacy red number on, and it an okay dress, until you looked at her face. It was completely covered, and she had to take it off to even speak. That is what I call ridiculous. Everyone has bad days, and some people just have a wacky style that doesn’t fit into the norms of that year, or any year for that matter. And I think it’s great that those people are around, unless other people who look up to them make the trends catch on. Then it is horrific. Also, each individual has a different sense of style. That fact will never change. But, what is in style has an effect on personal style, whether it’s to go with the flow or to go against it. I have to admit that fashion these days is much better than it was in the decades of the 80’s and 90’s, but some of it is coming back. I was never a fan of plaid, but I do have to admit that now that I am seeing it everywhere, I’m starting to like it more and more. It is in more vibrant colors, and is coming in all kinds of different styles, not just baggy shirts. That is a plus. As long as the fanny packs stay in the past, I’ll accept the mixing of the decades. As long as the hair styles stay back in time for a long while. As long as you express yourself through your clothes, I guess it really doesn’t matter what you wear. So long as you like it, that’s what it is meant for. Clothes are an extension of your personality and are a way to express your individuality. So, if you disagree with me and think Lady GaGa and the 80’s have the best fashion, then so be it. We all have different tastes, and that’s what makes society great. It allows for change and new ideas to each person seeing other people’s styles. It also affects how we see each other, so what we wear is essential to expressing ourselves. Fashion is an important thing of everyday life, though it doesn’t seem like it most of the time. Whether you spend two minutes getting ready or an hour, make fashion count. |
