On a recent search of the Internet, I discovered that September is a month of many things, such as Hispanic Heritage Month, Classical Music Month and the beginning of fall, but the most important is self-improvement. During the time of the changing of seasons and the leaves, why not make an effort to change ourselves for the better?

Most of us see at least one thing about ourselves that needs some improvement but sometimes people get so caught up in a daily routine that they procrastinate trying to fix anything. These improvements can be a number of things, like exercising, eating right, meeting new people, and becoming more active in daily activity or slowing down to breathe in the fresh air every now and again.

Although this month seems crazy with school, hurricanes, and the upcoming election, college students should not forget to take every day challenges and improve themselves, even among the hustle and bustle of the surrounding world.

Environmentally, going green and helping the environment in whatever way deemed possible is a wonderful way to get started. Recycling and not wasting water or electricity are both easy ways to do this. Going green is good for nature and it will help you feel better about yourself.
Getting enough sleep can be useful as well, and with all of the busy schedules, it is difficult to get a good eight hours of sleep, but those extra minutes or hours can be a huge boost in one’s health and attitude, allowing each day to go by much smoother.

Self-improvement can be fun as well. Everyone can use a sharper mind, and playing games such as Sudoku, putting together puzzles, and solving crosswords help better memories and strengthen the mind.

Even though Self-Improvement month is not widely publicized much any more, it is still an important aspect of the year. In fact, students should take the initiative to make self-improvements in all 12 months rather than just one. It can be a slow and simple change each month, or a more challenging one. Either way, people should put this plan into action.

Whether it be improving a relationship or working on getting better grades, take action today.
