Bible elective courses in public high schools PDF Print E-mail

The House of Representatives here in Arkansas have recently passed a bill that would put into law that courses on the Bible can be taught in public high schools. It seems that only in the Bible belt would we hear of such a law trying to be passed. The bill was drafted by Rep. Denny Altes of Fort Smith and it passed 71-16. Altes claims it will have no effect on what schools are currently doing. I think it would clearly have an effect on what schools are doing now. I know that even in my small town high school we did not have a Bible course, nor did we learn about the Bible in our literature courses.

Imagine being told you can’t vote in local elections just because you are a college student. The new Republican House speaker in New Hampshire, William O’Brien, is trying to prevent young voters from exercising their right in the state. He is pushing for a few different bills; one would prevent many students from voting in the cities where they go to college unless their parents or themselves had residency in that city before.

New Arkansas law is good first step, but should go further PDF Print E-mail

The Arkansas Legislature passed a law Feb. 19 banning the use of cell phones while driving in school zones and highway work zones. Starting Oct. 1, drivers will be fined $50 if using a handheld cell phone in a school zone during school hours when children are present. The fine is the same if drivers use a handheld cell phone in a highway work zone while workers are present.

“The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn” by Mark Twain is what most people would call a classic novel. The book was first printed in 1885. A new version that Twain scholar Alan Gribben is working on will combine the books “The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn” and “Tom Sawyer.”
