Dear Editor, A couple of weeks ago a warning was sent out to the entire University Commons. It warned them that if people continued to throw trash in a particular trash can they would all be fined.
This week all those that live in the University Commons received an e-mail that gave the perpetrators until March 10th to turn themselves in. If they didn’t, they threatened to fine the entire University Commons. This trash can is located in front of the parking lot across the street from Phase I apartments. So much trash is being thrown into this trash can that it apparently was overflowing onto the ground. Do they really think students that had nothing to do with this are going to pay? What if those to blame do not even live in the University Commons? This means they would not have gotten any of the warnings that were sent out. Why would those who live in the Phase II apartments walk all the way over to that trash can to throw away trash? They have a huge dumpster right behind their apartment only a couple of steps away. Those that live in Phase II do not even park close to that trash can so they would not be throwing trash in it on the way to their vehicle. If they do not want people to throw trash in a trash can, what do they throw in there? What else do people throw away but trash? The e-mail that was received this week also referred to the 2007-2008 Residential Guide to Living page 16. It says that students living on campus are to take room trash to dumpsters and are forbidden to take room trash to public restrooms and lobbies. It says nothing about the trash cans in front of parking lots. Why not just remove the trash can all together? Then people physically couldn’t throw trash in it. There is definitely a much better way to punish those to blame than the way they are trying to implement. If they decide to implement a blanket fine on the University Commons they will achieve nothing. |
