For the fourth straight week the Wonder Boys have held the number one ranking in the NABC Division II Poll, breaking the GSC record held by Montevallo. Tech captured the top spot on Jan. 19 after Augusta State's defeat at the hands of fellow GSC squad Valdosta State boosted the Wonder Boys to the top of the poll.
The Wonder Boys (21-0, 8-0) are one of two undefeated teams remaining in Division II. Southern Indiana has also boasts a spotless 21-0 record. Tech is three wins shy of tying the school record for best start.
Valdosta State climbed to number five this week after a loss by Fort Hays State. The Blazers were the conference favorites in the preseason, but were plagued a pair of early season losses. Last year the Wonder Boys and Blazers squared off in the GSC championship game. A top five showdown could be on the horizon, as Tech and Valdosta have dominated their respective divisions.
The Golden Suns suffered their first loss of the season to Christian Brothers on Feb. 5, but after rebounding well with dominant victories over Southern Arkansas and Arkansas-Monticello, Tech moved into the top five for the first time this season, coming in at number five. West division rival Delta State remained at number 12.
Tech defeated then-second ranked Delta State on Jan. 23, giving the Golden Suns sole possession of first place in the west division. However, their loss at Christian Brothers opened the door for the Lady Statesmen, winners of the last four conference championships.
On Feb. 20 the Golden Suns travel to Cleveland, Miss. to take on the Lady Statesmen in a game with major conference, regional, and national implications. The contest could determine who takes home the conference crown and could also shake up the regional rankings that determine the host site for the South Region in the NCAA Tournament. |

Men's Top 10
1. Diaper Dandies (Gr. 5-0)
2. St. Leo's Drew (Gr. 5-0)
3. Channel 4 News Team (Gr. 5-0)
4. Too Legit (Go. 5-0)
5. Showstoppers (Gr. 4-1)
6. Seagals Scent of Action (Go. 4-1)
7. kekumbas (Gr. 4-1)
8. SigEp (Go. 4-1)
9. The Skinny Dippers (Go. 4-1)
10. The Stinkles (Gr. 4-1)
The Diaper Dandies are the clear favorites from the men's division, but three other teams finished the regular season undefeated and could pose a threat to the heavily favored Diaper Dandies. Seagals Scent of Action is a surprise at no. 6, but is poised as perhaps the most underrated team in the tournament. The drawback for the tournament's dark horse? They drew no. 3 Channel 4 News Team in the first round. Look for that match-up to be the most exciting of the opening round. The winner of that game goes on to play the victor from another intriguing first round contest where the Showstoppers square off against the Stinkles. Still, the favorites to reach the championship round are the Diaper Dandies and St. Leo's Drew.
Women's Top 10
1. United (Gr. 4-1)
2. Absolute Skill (Gr. 4-1)
3. St. Leo's Saints (Gr. 3-2)
4. Blue Crush (Go. 4-1)
5. Delta Zeta (Go. 4-1)
6. Brick Layers (Gr. 3-2)
7. Zeta Tau Alpha Two (Gr. 1-4)
8. Ball Busters (Go. 1-4)
9. TECH GIRLS (Go. 1-4)
10. Zeta Tau Alpha One (Gr. 0-5)
Unlike in men's action, the women's division is wide open. No teams finished unbeaten, and United finished in first despite dropping their last game to Absolute Skill. St. Leo's Saints incurred a pair of losses but remains one of the most favored teams in the tournament. Any team in the bracket could well emerge as the champion in a wide open field. It should also be noted that TECH GIRLS and Zeta Tau Alpha One did not earn a postseason bid, as the women's bracket features only eight teams compared to the 16 in the men's division. Ball Busters earned the nod between the two single-win teams from the Gold League. If you want a first round game to watch, Absolute Skill and St. Leo's Saints are somehow paired together in the opening round. The winner will be favored to advance to the championship round to likely take on United, who has a much easier path to the finals. |

Magnolia can be a tough place to play. Just ask Christian Brothers. Last year the Bucs, ranked no. 8 and led by all-American Nick Kohs, walked into W.T. Watson Athletic Center and came away with 46-52 upset loss. So, Thursday's match up between Southern Arkansas and top-ranked Tech had all the makings of a trap game, and had it not been for a pair of tremendous performances, the Muleriders (9-12, 4-4) would have shocked a top 10 team for the second year in a row.
The teams battled back and forth for most of the game. By halftime the Wonder Boys (20-0 had captured a five point lead, and by the 13:52 mark had extended their advantage to 50-40. However, the Muleriders would bounce back, using a 16-4 run to take a 56-54 lead on a Channin Harden lay-up with just over seven minutes left. The two teams would trade baskets before reaching a stalemate at 64-64 with 2:15 remaining. Neither team would break the tie in regulation.
The Muleriders missed a golden opportunity as Damion Atkins last second tip shot came up short, giving the Wonder Boys a chance at redemption. They would make the most of it. In overtime Tech outscored the Muleriders 15-5 to walk away with a hard fought 79-69 decision and move to 20-0 on the season.
Renard Allen led the way with a career-high 28 points, surpassing his old best set in last year's GSC championship game against Valdosta State. Laithe Massey finished three assists shy of a triple-double with 14 points, 10 rebounds, and seven assists. Jeremy Dunbar and Brandon Friedel chipped in 13 and 10 points respectively.
David Noble kept pace for the Muleriders with 24 points, while Channin Harden added another 17. The Muleriders played an efficient game, outshooting the Wonder Boys and commiting fewer turnovers, but Tech's 45-29 rebounding edge proved to be the difference in the game.
The Wonder Boys return to action Saturday against Arkansas-Monticello in Tucker Coliseum. It is Tech's first home game in two weeks, when it set a school attendance record of 4,122 against Delta State. The Boll Weevils (10-7, 5-2) have won four of their last five entering the contest. Tip-off is set for 6 p.m. |

Who can stop the Diaper Dandies? With the All-University Tournament just a day away, several intramural teams will be searching for an answer to that very question. Tech’s most prolific men’s intramural team has once again completed a dominating regular season undefeated, this time winning their games by an average margin of nearly 50 points.
However, they are not alone in the ranks of the undefeated. Another intramural staple, St. Leo’s, posted a perfect 5-0 record, winning most of its games handily. Channel 4 News Team also finished unbeaten, joining St. Leo’s as the favorites to upset the Diaper Dandies in Monday’s All-U Tournament.
The lone team from the Gold League to close the regular season unscathed was Too Legit. The Gold League champions were not without its share of competitors though, winning four of their five games by less than 10 points.
Other favored teams in the upcoming All-U Tournament include Showstoppers, who gave St. Leo’s their closest game at 63-58. Seagals Scent of Action finished a point away from an undefeated regular season. The Jayhawks finished at 4-1 after dropping their last contest 56-51 against Too Legit.
“We’re very excited about our chances,” said Nathan Ware, a sophomore computer science major and member of Seagals Scent of Action. “There are a lot of good teams in this year’s tournament and I think it’s wide open. Nobody is unbeatable.”
The women’s division saw a new favorite emerge, as United finished 4-1 to knock reigning champion St. Leo’s from its lofty perch. The Saints finished 3-2, but are still expected to defend their title well in Tuesday’s All-U Tournament.
Absolute Skill and the Brick Layers are among the favored teams vying for a championship on Tuesday, finishing 4-1 and 3-2 respectively out of the Green League. Blue Crush and Delta Zeta both finished 4-1 out of the Gold League.
Tech’s women’s teams have enjoyed a great deal of success in recent years, making an impact at both the regional and national levels. That sensation is expected to continue this year with a bevy of talented teams in the mix.
The men’s All-U Tournament tips-off Monday at 6 p.m. The women’s tournament begins on Tuesday at 6 p.m. The games will be played in Hull Hall. For more information, visit intramural.atu.edu for schedules, brackets, and more.

Normally when I watch the Super Bowl, it’s to see my beloved Denver Broncos, but they missed the cut yet again. So, I tend to root for the underdog. But this year, I honestly don’t think there is one.
Super Bowl XLIV is a contest of offense versus defense. Statistically the New Orleans Saints have a stronger offense than the Indianapolis Colts, and the Colts have a stronger defense.
