The Wonder Boys used seven late runs to cap a come-from-behind victory against Ouachita Baptist on Sunday.
Trailing 7-2 over the 21st nationally-ranked team, Tech, led by junior shortstop Tony Sanchez and senior third baseman Jantzen Black, used seven runs in the last two innings to propel Tech to its 20th win. Ouachita Baptist pulled away in the fourth inning, when it scored five runs on two hits and two errors by the Wonder Boys. Tech scored its second run in the fifth when Sanchez batted in freshman outfielder Austin Gwatney, but OBU scored two more in the top of the sixth to pull out to a comfortable 7-2 lead. From there, Ouachita Baptist fell apart over the course of the seventh and eighth innings, giving up four in the seventh and three in the eighth. In the bottom of the seventh, Sanchez and senior catcher Justin Bollig both hit two-run singles to narrow the lead to 7-6. In the eighth, Sanchez batted in another runner to set up Black’s two-run triple that put Tech up 9-7. Senior reliever Craig Cameron picked up the win for Tech, giving up only two runs on two hits with one strikeout in 5.1 innings of work. Jerry Helferich picked up the loss for OBU, with three runs on two hits in 1.3 innings of work. Sanchez let Tech in batting, going 2-for-4 with two runs and five RBIs. Another notable performance is Hayden Miller who went 3-for-3 with two runs. Blake Lockwood led Ouachita Baptist, going 2-for-3 with one run and two RBIs. The win comes after Tech split a doubleheader with OBU on Saturday afternoon. Tech won the first game 7-6 in thrilling fashion, after freshman infielder Jonathan Houston tied the game in the ninth with a three-run homer. Austin Gwatney followed with the game-winning single. The second game, though, was all Ouachita Baptist, as it derailed the Wonder Boys, beating them 14-1. Tech will return to action Saturday, when it travels to Cleveland, Miss., to take on sixth-ranked Delta State. |
