| Wonder Boys take two wins over weekend |

Tech Wonder Boys baseball rebounded from a home loss Saturday to claim two home wins Sunday afternoon. With the wins Tech moves to 5-4 on the season. In Sunday's opener, the Wonder Boys posted s 12-7 victory against Fort Hays State University Tigers (1-1) behind 14 hits and five runs in the first two innings. Senior center fielder Matt Johnson, junior shortstop Chris Reese and senior designated hitter Nick Makris had the bases loaded on three singles to start the inning that eventually resulted in four runs. Johnson and Reese each scored on sacrifice flies and Makris came home off an RBI double by senior second baseman Josh Riley . Riley also recorded the final run of the inning on a wild pitch. In the second inning, Tech moved to 5-0 on an RBI single by junior catcher Landon Sullins. As the game progressed, the Wonder Boys got three runs in the bottom of the fifth on one hit and an error and grabbed three runs in the seventh inning. The win was earned by freshman Danny Parker who is 2-0 on the season. Parker pitched 5.1 innings and allowed nine hits and seven runs. He also allowed one walk and fanned three. Tech’s doubleheader ended with the Wonder Boys 10-9 victory against the 13th ranked Southern Indiana Eagles, who are the defending NCAA Division II National Champions. By the second inning, Tech jumped on the scoreboard with five runs and two hits. Riley began the inning with a two-run homer and Tech then added a third on a bases loaded walk. Sullins' single sent a fourth run home and the fifth run scored on another bases loaded walk. USI took the lead with eight runs in the top of the sixth. In the bottom of the sixth inning Tech grabbed three runs thanks to three hits and an error by the Eagles. Sophomore leftfielder Madison Beaird got the scoring started with a groundout, Makris drove home a run on a double to center and senior right fielder Colt Loehrs knocked in the last run with a sacrifice fly. Junior Ted Nanez earned the win over USI as he pitched four innings to relieve senior Caleb Powers, who is the reigning Gulf South Conference West Division Pitcher of the week. Nanez pitched four innings and allowed three hits and runs, while walking and fanning one. Powers, on the other hand, pitched five innings and allowed four hits and six runs, while walking four and striking out four as well. The Wonder Boys will travel to Emporia, Kan., on Friday to play a doubleheader against New Mexico Highlands. Game time is 1 p.m. On Sunday, the Wonder Boys will face host Emporia State at noon. |
