For the fourth straight week the Wonder Boys have held the number one ranking in the NABC Division II Poll, breaking the GSC record held by Montevallo. Tech captured the top spot on Jan. 19 after Augusta State's defeat at the hands of fellow GSC squad Valdosta State boosted the Wonder Boys to the top of the poll.
The Wonder Boys (21-0, 8-0) are one of two undefeated teams remaining in Division II. Southern Indiana has also boasts a spotless 21-0 record. Tech is three wins shy of tying the school record for best start. Valdosta State climbed to number five this week after a loss by Fort Hays State. The Blazers were the conference favorites in the preseason, but were plagued a pair of early season losses. Last year the Wonder Boys and Blazers squared off in the GSC championship game. A top five showdown could be on the horizon, as Tech and Valdosta have dominated their respective divisions. The Golden Suns suffered their first loss of the season to Christian Brothers on Feb. 5, but after rebounding well with dominant victories over Southern Arkansas and Arkansas-Monticello, Tech moved into the top five for the first time this season, coming in at number five. West division rival Delta State remained at number 12. Tech defeated then-second ranked Delta State on Jan. 23, giving the Golden Suns sole possession of first place in the west division. However, their loss at Christian Brothers opened the door for the Lady Statesmen, winners of the last four conference championships. On Feb. 20 the Golden Suns travel to Cleveland, Miss. to take on the Lady Statesmen in a game with major conference, regional, and national implications. The contest could determine who takes home the conference crown and could also shake up the regional rankings that determine the host site for the South Region in the NCAA Tournament. |
