Normally when I watch the Super Bowl, it’s to see my beloved Denver Broncos, but they missed the cut yet again. So, I tend to root for the underdog. But this year, I honestly don’t think there is one. Super Bowl XLIV is a contest of offense versus defense. Statistically the New Orleans Saints have a stronger offense than the Indianapolis Colts, and the Colts have a stronger defense.
I believe the Saints defense will manage to shut down Peyton Manning by breaking through their strong offensive line which will add pressure to bring him out of the pocket and his comfort zone. Once they’ve taken care of Manning, cutting off a running game will not be too hard. Basically without Manning at the helm, a rushing game will not fare well against a strong New Orleans defense. For the Saints, Drew Brees does much better under pressure in the pocket which will do him good against the Colts defense. Of which, the Colts defense may be able to shut Brees down but they have a very strong running game as shown this season. Because of this advantage with the rush, the Saints are more balanced and versatile than the Colts which will most likely lead to a victory.
Although the Saints have the advantage in cavalry, Manning is a comeback kid. The only way I can see the Saints losing to the Colts is if they fail to produce a good cushion before the fourth quarter. If it’s a one possession game in the fourth, Manning will most likely pull through for Indianapolis. Time clock management will play a big role in the game, and the team with the longest possession throughout will most likely be the victor. Why? Because both the Saints and the Colts will be trying to keep the other offense off the field. The longer the Saints hold the ball, the less time Manning has to come back from behind. And the longer the Colts have the ball, the more time they have to keep the Saints lead down. By no means will Super Bowl XLIV be a blowout. It will be the game to watch not only for the commercials and halftime show, but for the brawl that will unfold upon the field. Hopefully for the Saints, not only will this be their first Super Bowl appearance, but their first National Championship.Predictions: Saints 31 Colts 21; MVP: Reggie Bush |
