| Softball Suns split pair of doubleheaders Friday, Saturday |

On Saturday the Golden Suns softball team played in its second double-header of the weekend. In Friday’s doubleheader Tech posted a 3-1 win in the first game but fell short in the second as Southeastern Oklahoma posted a 8-3 victory. Saturday’s doubleheader was another split as Tech faced Northeastern State University RiverHawks at the Chartwells Complex. NSU picked up a 4-3 victory in 11 innings in the first game. Tech fell short in the first inning, but came back strong in the bottom of the second. Designated player freshman Haley Hudson got the inning started with a single to center and then senior leftfielder Jessica Fields walked. Hudson scored from second on a RBI single to center by freshman catcher Molly Edwards to tie the game 1-1. The next five innings saw little action, but Tech responded in the bottom of the eighth inning as freshmen pitcher Mackenzie Powers scored on a single to center. Junior Maddie Roncketto centerfielder, singled to left, tying the game 2-2. In the bottom of the ninth, Tech got another run as Alicia Zack doubled, allowing senior Dana Stephenson to score, tying the game at 3-3. Neither team scored in the 10th inning nor was Tech able to score in the bottom of the 11th. In the second game, Tech’s offense came on strong as the Suns scored a run in the first inning as senior first baseman Tiphani Moon doubled home a run following a walk. At the bottom of the inning Tech took the lead 3-0 on a two-run single by senior second baseman Shanda Jimeson. The Golden Suns closed the game’s scoring in the fifth inning as they made four runs off five hits. Edwards made the big hit of the inning with a 2-RBI single to center giving Tech a 7-1 lead. In the end Edwards led the way with a 3-for-3 effort at the plate with two RBIs. The Golden Suns return to action this weekend as they travel to Wichita Falls, Texas, to compete in Holiday Inn at Falls/Midwestern State Invitational’s. On Friday, Tech goes up against Fort Hays State at 7 p.m., before playing St. Edwards and Abilene Christian on Saturday at 11 a.m. On Sunday, the Suns finish out the tournament as they play Incarnate Word and 12th ranked Midwestern State. |
