Arkansas Tech volleyball continued its winning ways here Tuesday evening as the Golden Suns posted a three-set win over Arkansas-Monticello (25-18, 25-11, 25-17) and in the process clinched its second Gulf South Conference West Division title in the last three years and fifth overall title since joining the league in 1996 and earning the No. 1 seed from the West Division in next weekend’s GSC Tournament in Pensacola, Fla.

With the win, Tech improves to 29-4 overall and 10-1 in the GSC and runs its win streak to 11 straight matches, while UAM falls to 3-26 overall and 0-11 in the league standings.

“It was good to come down here and win in three in a gym where we have had a hard time and it was a good way to end our GSC road matches this season,” Golden Suns Head Coach Kristy Bayer said following Tuesday’s match.

Leading the way for Tech was senior middle blocker Sarah Von Lienen (Lakeland, Tenn.), who recorded 11 kills, including seven kills in Tech’s 25-18 win in the first set and she added four blocks and hit .500 in the win. In addition to Von Lienen, senior right side hitter Ashlynn Hamrick (Jackson, Mich.) recorded nine kills and hit .333, while junior outside hitter Kelly O’Malley (Billings, Mont.) had five kills and three blocks.

Tech’s defense, which recorded 41 digs and 10 blocks, was paced defensively by junior outside hitter Thabata Galvao (Sao Paulo, Brazil) and junior libero Brennae Benda (Woodstock, Ill.) each notched nine digs, while freshman middle blocker Sara Motsinger (Normal, Ill.) had two blocks.

UAM was paced by Monica Perkins-Miller, who had seven kills and three blocks, while Stephanie Hatten led the way defensively with nine digs in the loss.

For the match, Tech had 39 kills, finished with a .258 hitting percentage and recorded eight service aces, while the Cotton Blossoms recorded 20 kills, but was held to an .000 hitting percentage and had three aces.

“Our seniors had a great performance tonight and it was a good way to carry momentum into our Senior Night home match on Thursday against Henderson State,” Bayer added.

The Golden Suns return home to Tucker Coliseum for a 7 p.m. GSC match on today against Henderson State. The match will mark the final home match of the 2010 season and the final home match for Tech’s three seniors – setter Kera Dukic (White Lake, Mich.), Hamrick and Von Lienen.

Senior middle blocker, Sarah Von Lienen, recorded 11 kills during Tuesday

night's win over Arkansas-Monticello.
